I’m back from Ireland. And now for a story.

See the violin player? And the girl, and the guy with the flowers who looks like he doesn’t want to be there?

Well here’s what happened.

I was taking photos of the violin player as I was walking through Dublin, and suddenly a girl walks up to him with flowers. They start laughing, the violin player stops playing to talk, and suddenly she sees me and asks for me to come over to her. So I do.

She says that her friend is playing a trick on her. The trick is: he said his step-father is dead, but she realized that he’s actually not dead. So for playing the cruel joke on her, she bought him flowers and asked the violin player to play the theme song of Schindler’s list in memory of his father, while I take pictures of them.

This is strange. But I’m game. We wait until he arrives. So the violin player continues to play, we all go to a cafe. She tells him me and my girlfriend Erin are friends from Chicago visiting Dublin. She then asks him about his step-father while laughing, not able to contain herself within her joke.

GIRL: So how are you doing since your step-father’s de-HA! (And throws her head to the table in laughter.)

Suddenly I realize that he’s not acting. He was somber, he was sad, he was quiet, he was confused, and when I asked him how long he knew his step-father, through his response I realized this man was not acting. OR. He was the best actor I’ve ever encountered, doing a very dark joke on a friend.

Earlier, when I asked the girl how she came to find out his step-father wasn’t dead. She said “I was thinking about it last night, and realized it couldn’t be true.”

Me: But you are positive right? You have proof?

Girl: No. But I’m sure he’s not dead.

The rest of the conversation at the cafe was super awkward until we went outside. She tells David the violin player to play a song in memory of his dead father, and I take a picture of them.

This is the photo. And his face doesn’t lie. That dudes father is fer reals dead. And that chick is crazy.
